Earthquakes1: When They Hit

It was 1:47am on September 21, 1999. Suddenly2, buildings3 rocked4 back and forth5 and jumped up and down when a big earthquake hit Taiwan. When it was all over, about 13,000 buildings were destroyed6 and over 2, 000 people were dead. Today, earthquakes continue to hit not only Taiwan but other countries as well.
Actually7, millions of earthquakes happen in the crust8 of the earth each year. Of course, we don't feel most of these. However, about 140 are big enough to be called "strong" or "major9" quakes10. Usually these ones leave a terrible trail11 of destruction12 and fear in their wake13. The greatest reason for this is that they are so unpredictable14. No one really knows when or where they will hit. And after the first jolt15, there are usually many aftershocks16 that keep people in fear. Understanding why earthquakes happen may help to calm17 some of that fear.
