The Maasai tribe of Kenya and northern Tanzania is one of the most well-known tribes in Africa. Their distinct customs and way of dressing have changed very little in centuries. Many Maasai live a seminomadic lifestyle, which means they rarely settle down in one place for very long. They speak a language called Maa. Many of the Maasai also speak Swahili and English, which are the official languages of Kenya and Tanzania.
Cattle are very important to the Maasai. They use cattle as money, which means they trade cattle to get the things they need. Cattle are also their primary source of food. Because of the importance of cattle in the Maasai society, cattle are often used to measure a man's wealth.
The Maasai believe that their god, Enkai, gave them all of the cattle in the
world. If someone who isn't a Maasai has cattle, the Maasai believe that the
individual must have stolen those cattle from a Maasai. Therefore, they believe
stealing cattle from other tribes is simply a rightful act of taking back what is theirs.
Maasai men do a famous jumping dance to show their strength. In traditional Maasai culture, young men have to kill a lion before they can get married. Women have their own set of duties in traditional Maasai culture. They are responsible for cooking, raising the children, and building huts for their family to live in.
There are about 900,000 Maasai living in Kenya and Tanzania. Some of them no longer live in rural areas. They, like people from other tribes, have moved into towns and cities and live like many other people around the world. However, many Maasai still try to keep their traditional culture alive.
