History enthusiasts will love Taiwan. There are lots of historic sites to see, explore, and learn about. If you are interested in finding out more about Taiwan's history, a great place to start is Tainan.
To the west of the city center, you'll find Anping Fort. The history of this site goes back almost 400 years, as Dutch forces built a fort city here between 1624 and 1634. It was originally called Zeelandia. The Dutch used the site as a military, political, and economic base of operations in Taiwan. The Dutch gave up control of the fort when they were defeated by Koxinga, also known as Zheng Chenggong.
Over the years, the site has changed a lot. The inner fort, which housed offices, a church, and living quarters, was destroyed during the Japanese colonial period. The current buildings were mainly reconstructed during the 1970s, though parts of the original Dutch outer wall are still standing.
Another important historical site in Tainan is Chikan Tower, also built by the Dutch. The cultural relics of Chikan Tower have witnessed the periods of Dutch rule, the Ming Zheng era, and the Qing Dynasty. It was originally constructed in 1653 and is said to have been built using materials imported by the Dutch from overseas, known as Fort Provintia. The Dutch have used Chikan Tower, situated across the Taijiang from the presentday Anping Fort, as the administrative center on the island. What we see today is mostly temples constructed by the Han Chinese on the remains of the Dutch fortress.
