Krishna, considered a major god in Hinduism and Vaishnavism, decided to appear on earth probably in 3,228 BCE in Mathura, India. Often represented with blue skin, he is believed to be the original source of the all-powerful god Vishnu. We know his story thanks to three works describing his life: the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Harivamsa.

Krishna's life was full of mischief, love, and adventure, yet his tale had a very sad beginning: Krishna was born in a prison cell. His mother had been put there by her own brother, King Kamsa. A priest told Kamsa that he would be killed by his nephew, so he decided to have them all killed. Luckily, Krishna survived and escaped the prison. He was raised by a foster mother and lived among the village cowherds. There he would often get into trouble, stealing some milk when no one was looking. But the cowherds still loved him. At a very young age, Krishna was even believed to have killed two monsters named Trinavarta and Putana. Upon reaching adulthood, Krishna returned to the land of his birth and killed his evil uncle. Afterwards, he became an advisor to the new prince and got drawn into a terrible war. His successes on the battlefield are described in the Bhagavad- Gita As It Is.

One of the most memorable stories of Krishna's life is his love of Radha. The two were deeply in love, but they never married. Why? There are many theories. One is that Radha believed her status in society was too low to marry Krishna. Another is that Krishna believed in a firm separation between love and marriage. Some people view Radha as a representation of the human soul. For them, the love between Krishna and Radha is the love between god and humanity.

雖然克里希納的人生離不開調皮搗蛋、愛情與冒險元素，但他的故事卻有個非常悲慘的開端：克里希納生於監牢，因為他的母親被親哥哥卡姆薩國王監禁。祭司告訴卡姆薩，他的生命將會斷送在外甥手上，所以他決定斬草除根。幸好克里希納活了下來，並逃出監獄。他由養母撫養長大，住在村裡的牧牛人家。他常趁大家不注意時偷牛奶而闖禍，但牧牛人家仍然很愛他。據說克里希納甚至在很小的時候，就殺死了名為崔拿瓦塔和普妲娜的怪物。

克里希納長大成人後回到出生地，殺死了他的壞舅舅。爾後，他成了新王的宰相，並捲入一場可怕的戰事。《博伽梵歌原意》中描述了他戰場大捷的事蹟。

克里希納的生平事蹟中最令人難忘的其中一個故事，就是他和羅陀的愛情故事。他們深愛對方，卻從未結褵。為何？原因眾說紛紜。有人說，羅陀認為自己的社會地位太低，不配嫁給克里希納。另一則說法是，克里希納深信愛情與婚姻是兩回事。有些人視羅陀為凡人的代表。對他們來說，克里希納和羅陀之間的愛情就是神人之愛。
