Ezra Miller Finds Success in the Stories He Loves
For Ezra Miller, performing was an early ambition. The actor and musician began training as an opera singer at age six to help get rid of his stutter, and by eight, he was already performing professionally.
As he grew older, Miller became heavily influenced by the Harry Potter books and movies. To him, they were more than just stories. "To have a resource like these stories that remind you of what's good in the world . . . was helpful to me in many ways," he says. Miller often faced bullying in school because of his stutter and personal interests. To cope, he would come home and spend hours listening to Harry Potter audiobooks.
It's fitting, then, that he was chosen to act in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which was written by J. K. Rowling. What's more is that Miller's character, Credence Barebone, reminded him of his own experiences as a troubled child. One of Rowling's messages, he says, is that people always have the choice to stand up for others.
