Snowy fun for everyone
On Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido, winters can be very harsh. Snowfall varies widely, ranging from as much as 11 meters to as little as 1.8 meters. It often continues into March, or even April in some places. Despite these tough conditions, the locals have chosen to embrace their winter weather. Each year, the city of Sapporo hosts one of the world's largest and most famous snow festivals.
The Sapporo Snow Festival began in 1950, when local students built six snow statues in Odori Park, which attracted around 50,000 visitors.
