The Timeless Charm of The Last Supper

One interesting fact about The Last Supper is that in some ways, it was a technical failure. Leonardo da Vinci used an experimental painting technique for his mural. Instead of painting on wet plaster as most artists did at the time, he tried using a mixture of egg tempera and oil paint on a dry wall. Unfortunately, this method resulted in an unstable painting. The paint began to flake off several years after the work was completed. To make matters worse, the mural has suffered damage many times over the centuries. Many restoration attempts have been made to save the painting, and as a result, very little of the original work remains. When you view The Last Supper, it’s possible that not even one of Leonardo da Vinci’s actual brushstrokes can be seen.
