Katherine Rundell's fantasy novel Impossible Creatures was published in September 2023. The book begins in our world but quickly transports readers to somewhere very different and unusual.
The main character, Christopher, is visiting his grandfather's home in Scotland. While exploring the hills behind it, he is surprised to find a baby griffin—a creature that he never thought could exist—drowning in a lake. After saving the griffin, he discovers that his grandfather is the guardian of a secret portal that leads to a magical world. Later, Mal, the owner of the griffin, flees through that portal and begs Christopher to help her. She explains that magical creatures in her world are dying, and she can’t save them alone.
