Riding Trains and Sipping Tea: Alishan's Twin Treasures

Long before modern highways crossed Taiwan's rugged landscape, Chiayi's Alishan Forest Railway pioneered the way through the mountains. Its tracks wound through a large forest of tall trees, offering stunning views of the region's natural beauty. Let's get aboard now and let the train carry us back to the early days of the railway, when the tracks were first laid through this wooded forest.
After Japan took control of Taiwan in 1895, the government recognized the value of Alishan's wood, but transporting timber from such rough terrain was no easy task. The railway skillfully dealt with the steep slopes of the mountains using horseshoe curves, a spiral route, and Z-shaped switchbacks. Horseshoe curves were employed to ensure a gradual rise or fall for the trains by incorporating a nearly 180-degree bend. Winding around the mountain, the spiral route allowed the trains to climb gradually through gentle curves. In places where space for a spiral route was limited, Z-shaped switchbacks were adopted. These involved a series of back-and-forth turns, where the trains repeatedly moved in one direction and then switched to the opposite direction.

  • pioneer      vt.

The Truth about Lies

Can the polygraph machine really catch liars?
Since ancient times, people have been curious about whether others are telling the truth or lying. Various methods have been used throughout history by different societies to separate fact from fiction.
In ancient India, suspects of crimes were asked to chew on rice and spit it out after telling their story. If the rice looked dry after being chewed, the suspect was considered guilty. The ancient Indians believed that liars produced less saliva because of the stress and fear they were experiencing. Ancient Saudi Arabia had a similar way of identifying liars. They put a hot spoon on the person’s tongue. If it left a blister, the person was thought to be lying. If there was no blister, then the person was deemed truthful. This method was also based on the connection between dishonesty and salivation.

  • separate A from B   將 A 與 B 分開
  • fiction    n.
  • suspect   n.
