老闆要一個blow-by-blow account，不是吹來吹去的帳戶
Peter剛剛談了一個重要的案子，會後，他的外籍老闆跟他說：
Please give me a blow-by-blow account of what happened.
Blow-by-blow account? 「吹來吹去」還是「打來打去」的帳戶？Peter搞不清楚老闆到底要什麼。
今天來看看blow這個字的道地用法。
1. Please give me a blow-by-blow account of what happened.
（Ｘ）請給我一份吹來吹去的帳戶。
（Ｏ）請詳細告訴我會議的細節。
Blow不太好用，因為它的意思很多，我們最熟悉的意思是「吹、吹氣」，例如：：
• A breeze blew over the garden. 一陣微風吹過花園。
• The air conditioner is blowing hard. 空調冷氣的風很大。（吹得很猛）
Blow還有一個意思，「用拳頭一擊」。解說拳擊時，解說員多半講得很詳細，一拳一拳講，讓人身歷其境，這一拳一拳，就是blow-by-blow，引申為「極為詳細的、一五一十的」，後面經常搭配account（說明），或description（描述）。
例句：
He gave us a blow-by-blow description of the match. 他給我們詳細敘述了比賽經過。
2. I had a blow-up with John.
（Ｘ）我和John一起吹氣。
（Ｏ）我跟John吵了一架／我和John鬧翻了。
Blow up這個片語有很多種意思，除了「爆炸」之外，也有「突然生氣」的意思：
• The bomb is blowing up. 炸彈正在爆炸。
• I'm sorry I blew up at you. 很抱歉, 對你發火了。
“I had a blow-up with John.”這句的blow-up是名詞，指「意見不合、大吵一架、鬧翻」。
另一個看起來相近的blow in，意思是「突然出現」，有點像被風吹進來的那種意味。
• Look who's just blown in! 瞧瞧誰來了！
• He blew in to the office this morning. 他今早突然出現在辦公室。
3. He's been blowing hot and cold on the project.
（Ｘ）他一直吹嘘這個案子。
（Ｏ）他對這案子的態度一直變來變去。
天氣經常忽冷忽熱，變化無常，“Blow hot and cold”指對一件事情態度如天氣一般忽冷忽熱、搖擺不定，可以和介係詞“on” 或 “about” 搭配。
• My boss keeps blowing hot and cold on whether to hire new staff.
我主管對是否招聘新員工這事，變來變去的。
