Kevin和外籍老闆討論到最近要晉用的一個業務主管人選，老闆問這個人特質為何，為何要僱用此人，Kevin回答：
He has many relations.
他以為這話的意思是「他關係很好」，但這話聽在老外耳裡是另一個意思，relation這個字有親屬的意思，相當於relative。
Relation 親戚？關係？
He has many relations.
（Ｘ）他關係很好／人脈很廣。
（Ｏ）他親戚很多。
Kevin看老闆不太理解他的意思，繼續解釋：
He knows a lot of people.
其實這樣講老闆還是不懂。「他認識很多人」，在中文講得通，但老外應該不會聯想到這是指人脈廣。Know這種「認識」是很普通的關係，電視上常看到的名人、只有一面之緣的人都可以用know，你認得這些人，未必這些人認得你。人脈廣、關係好，不只要認得，還要有一定的情感聯結。
Connections 人脈
人脈在英文可以用connections這個字：
He has connections. 他人脈很廣。
Connection這個字就是指社會關係、人際關係、可以在業務上幫忙的熟人。再來看兩個例句：
• He only got the job because of his connections! 他是因為關係才得到了這份工作！
• He has important connections in Washington. 他在華盛頓認識一些很有權勢的人。
Relation vs relationship
再回來看relation這個字，常有學生問relationship和relation有何不同？
Relation和relationship差別在於後者多了一個ship，ship是一種狀態，relationship是形容一種情感狀態，例如：
John和Mary在交往中，我們會說
（Ｏ）John and Mary are in a relationship.
（Ｘ）John and Mary are in a relation.
Relation指的是一種關聯性，國家和國家之間的關係、經濟關係，都用relation，經常用複數：
• They are anxious to develop friendly relations with their neighboring countries.
他們急於和鄰國發展友好關係。
但如果用”have relations with someone”，這種關係就不只是一般關係，而是指性關係：
• I heard Jim got fired for having relations with his secretary. 我聽說Jim因為和秘書有染被開除了。
