1. Eating Shaved Ice at the Night Market 在夜市吃剉冰
Claire and her Italian friend, Marco, are sitting at a table in a shaved ice shop.
C=Claire M=Marco
C: Dig in.
M: Mm! Pretty good! What’s this white stuff? Whipped cream?
C: That’s condensed milk. The trick is to get a bit of mango, condensed milk, and ice cream with every spoonful of ice.
M: I’m going to need a bigger spoon for that! What are those green bits on yours?
C: Want to try some? (Marco nods. Claire shares some with him.) It’s called mangguo qing─crunchy candied sour green mango.
M: (Mouth full) That’s a mouthful.
2. Trying Gelato 品嚐義式冰淇淋
Marco and Claire are seated in a gelato shop, each with a gelato cone.
C=Claire M=Marco
M: I’ve heard the gelato here is authentic.
C: I wouldn’t know the difference anyway.
M: I can’t believe you’ve never had gelato before. Go on─don’t be polite.
C: (Takes a bite) Not bad─very tasty.
M: That’s because gelato has less fat than ice cream. There’s less fat to coat the inside of your mouth, so you can taste the flavors better. Also, notice the texture . . .
C: Very creamy.
M: Yes, creamy and smooth. There’s less air in gelato, which makes it much denser than ice cream.
C: You know─this would go great with coffee.
M: Now, you’re thinking like an Italian!
