Kaohsiung is getting closer to its goal of being a "green" city especially after the completion of Aozihdi Forest Park and She Zih Lin Basin Wetland Park, which bring urban dwellers closer to nature.

Aozihdi Forest Park is located at the intersection of Jhihsheng Road and Nanping Road in northern Kaohsiung. It is adjacent to Kaohsiung Arena, Hanshin Arena Shopping Plaza, Bo-ai Landscape Roadway, and Aozihdi MRT Station. On its west side stand Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts and Chaishan. With its 10-acre land area, it has become the largest park in this developing area of the city. Its surrounding region has been rapidly developing and therefore attracting a growing number of residents in recent years. The park opened at a crucial time in order to provide a quality living environment for the public.

Aozihdi Forest Park was designed with many ecological aspects in mind. The "Tropical Zone" has an abundance of palm trees creating a warm tropical atmosphere. The "Breeze Zone" is full of trees, bushes, and sunshine - a tranquil space suitable for a stroll or meditation. The ecological pond, on the southwest side of the park, is home to many species. It also plays an important role in flood detention and precaution against natural disasters. Due to the principle of hydrosphere convection, the pond brings in cool air currents from the southwest in the summer, which reduces heat and adjusts the micro-climate.

Another special feature of the park is its various colorful trees and blossoms - Golden Trumpet, Chinaberry, Flame trees, Floss-silk trees, and many others. Different colors decorate the park in different seasons. Together with the flower clusters on Mingcheng Road and Nanping Road, the flourishing blossoms give Kaohsiung residents a chance to experience the rhythm of four seasons.

On the other side of the city, She Zih Lin Basin, at the upstream of Love River, has become a pleasant wetland park. She Zih Lin Basin Wetland Park is located in the Dingciang Village of Sanmin District, close to Dingjinhou Road. The entire wetland is approximately 3.7 acres. It used to be surrounded by mango trees which is why it was named She Zih Lin Basin , the Taiwanese word for "mango" . As an important wetland along Caogong Canal, She Zih Lin Basin used to play a significant role in agricultural irrigation. However, due to the transition and changing careers of the residents, neighboring fields were damaged, canals were interrupted, and the environment deteriorated due to excess littering. To restore it to its original natural environment, Kaohsiung City Government renovated the basin and transformed it into a wetland park. Now it has revealed a new face, just like a patch of heaven.

The water of She Zih Lin Basin is purified naturally through three layers of purification - sludge clarifier, natural aeration tank, and aquatic plants. The result is improved water quality of all streams of Love River, a better functionality of flood detention and natural disaster precaution, as well as enhanced safety protection of area residents. This refreshed wetland has even become a great place to watch aquatic birds and rare species. Along with other wetlands, a complete wetland ecological path formed which marks Kaohsiung's steady move towards becoming an ecologically-friendly city with biological diversity.

The "Ecological Grove Zone" in the northern side of the park serves as a buffer which diminishes the interference of the freeway on the north side to the creatures and environment. Whether it's chatting with neighbors in the "neighborhood park", biking with family on the bike path, or simply taking a rest, residents are enjoying this quiet, carefree piece of land very much!
