Chen Mei-hua, an associate professor of sociology at National Sun Yat-sen University, is a long-term observer of beauty and hair salon businesses, and notes that in the 1980s such businesses’ advertising urged customers to “come in and get pampered,” and then in the 1990s the marketing lingo was all about “going to a hair salon to relax.”

And to do a proper head, neck, and shoulders massage, one doesn't just rub according to any old whim. As well as teaching that one should use the fingertips, not the nails, when massaging the scalp, textbooks also devote an entire chapter to the topic of how to combine a hair wash with advanced massage techniques.
