World AIDS Day
 Keeping the promise
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.
HIV is a 1)deadly and 2)relatively new 3)virus. The oldest record of the virus is a blood 4)sample taken from a Congolese man in 1959. It wasn't until 1981 that a group of American scientists discovered that HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. Since then over 25 million people around the world have died of the disease. Today, more than 36 million people 5)worldwide are 6)infected with HIV. This makes AIDS one of the worst killers in human history.

6) infect (v.) 感染

2.
While AIDS has proven to be a hard disease to 7)cure, it is not hard at all to avoid the disease. The best way to fight the disease has been to give people information on how it is spread. At first people believed many 8)myths about AIDS. People thought that you could get AIDS from a toilet seat, or that only certain people got the disease. Not so.
7) cure (v.) 治癒
Scientists are trying to develop a cure for cancer(癌).
8) myth (n.)
Don't believe that story--it's just a myth.
3.
In 1988, to help educate people, the United Nations started World AIDS Day, an international AIDS 9)awareness day. Every December 1, people around the world remember those that have died from the disease and support those that are still 10)suffering. It is also a day to remind people about practicing safe sex and to have 11)fundraisers to collect money.
9) awareness (n.)
The company hopes to increase awareness about its products(產品).
10) suffer (v.)
Ken suffers from depression(沮喪).
11) fundraiser (n.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.
One of the most 12)recognizable 13)symbols in the fight against AIDS is the red 14)ribbon. The ribbon became popular in 1991 after actor Jeremy Irons wore it at an 15)awards show. Since then, wearing a small red ribbon on the 16)lapel of your jacket has been a way to show your support for those 17)struggling with AIDS.
12) recognizable (a.)
The man's face was beaten(被毆打) so badly it was not recognizable.
13) symbol (n.)
A dove(鴿子) is a symbol of peace(和平).
14) ribbon (n.)
Sheila put a pretty ribbon on the present.
15) award (n.) 獎
Frank won an award for his painting.
16) lapel (n.)
Barry wore a white flower on his lapel.
17) struggle (v.)
After the serious car accident, Tony struggled to stay alive.
5.
Because of the red ribbon 18)campaign and 19)events like World AIDS Day, people now know much more about the disease than they used to. Sadly, the spread of the disease is worse than ever. Right now over 40 million people are living with HIV. In Taiwan, eight people are 20)diagnosed with HIV everyday.
18) campaign (n.)
Some famous people participate(參與) in campaigns to save animals.
19) event (n.)
More than 500 people attended(參加) the event.
20) diagnose (v.) 診斷
Sam was diagnosed with a heart disease.
6.
Still, AIDS is most 21)destructive in Africa. The medicines that help people live with AIDS are too expensive for most Africans. Without 22)medication, people are unable to work or support themselves once they get the disease. 23)Politicians and 24)pharmaceutical companies in wealthy countries often promise to make AIDS medicines 25)affordable in Africa, but this has not happened yet. That is why this year's AIDS Day 26)theme is "Keeping the Promise." It is hoped that 27)citizens of the world's richest countries will 28)pressure their governments to keep their promise to the people of Africa by making AIDS medicines widely 29)available.
21) destructive (a.)
A bomb(炸彈) is quite destructive.
22) medication (n.)
Don't forget to take your medication three times a day.
23) politician (n.)
I never trust(信任) any politicians.
24) pharmaceutical (a.)
That pharmaceutical company makes a lot of money.
25) affordable (a.)
It's more affordable to buy a house in the country than in the city.
26) theme (n.) 主題
The theme of this book is "Never give up."
27) citizen (n.) 公民
Hank is a citizen of the United States.
28) pressure (v.) 對……施壓
Larry's wife is pressuring him to buy a bigger house.
29) available (a.)
