How a company came to have a marjor influence on restaurants across the world.
At the turn of the 20th century, there were only about 2,000 cars in all of France. In the hope of encouraging business for their company, Michelin Tires, brothers Andre and Edouard Michelin published a guidebook listing mechanics, gas stations, hotels, and restaurants. Despite the low number of cars in France, the brothers gave out 35,000 free copies of the first-ever Michelin Guide. Over the next decade, they would publish and hand out similar guides for other countries in Europe. As cars became more widely used, the tire company grew, and so did the popularity of the guide.
