1. Excuse me、I'm sorry和I beg your pardon都有"對不起"、"請原諒"等意思，但用法有別。
Excuse me和Sorry最大的差別是，Excuse me通常在說或做可能令人不悅的事情之前使用；而Sorry是造成別人不便之後，表示歉意。

• Excuse me, does this bus go to the train station? 不好意思，請問這輛汽車到火車站嗎？
• Excuse me, could I get past? 對不起，可以借過嗎？
• Excuse me, do you have the time? 對不起，現在幾點？

另外可以用please來加強語氣，例如：

• Excuse me please, I need to get off. 對不起（讓一下），我要下車。

如果自己身旁有人，向人問路、借過，就用excuse us。

2. I'm sorry常用來表示自己犯了某種過失，也可以表示"遺憾"，如對別人的不幸有所表示，或不能滿足對方的要求等。I'm sorry for giving you so much trouble. 對不起，給你添了這麼多麻煩。

• I'm sorry I didn't do the work well. 很遺憾，我沒把工作做好。
• l Sorry, you can't come in. 對不起（很抱歉），你不能進來。

3. I beg your pardon可用於（正式場合）：①做錯事道歉；②談話中提出異議以前；③沒聽清對方的話，希望他重複一遍時（可說Beg pardon或 Par-don，可用問號，說時用升調）；④（以不友好的語氣說）不相信對方的話是真實的；例如：

• I beg your pardon for coming late. 請原諒，我來遲了。
• I beg your pardon.（I beg pardon）Is this your bag？打擾了，請問這是你的包嗎？
• I beg your pardon but that is my coat. 對不起，可那是我的外套呀。

A: l The answer is B．答案是 B。
B: I beg your pardon. 對不起，請再說一遍好嗎？

《特別補充說明 》Sorry和Excuse me的使用上，英國人和美國人有點小區別：
英國人很喜歡用Sorry，所以有時他們會用Sorry代替Excuse me.

例如：I'm sorry, but do you think you could move your car? 而美語偶爾也聽人用Excuse me表示Sorry的意思，例如：Excuse me, I didn't see you there.

1. The advice you give others isn't worth a hill of beans if you don't follow it.
   be not worth a hill of beans一文不值，一無是處Ex. My boss is concerned this proposal isn't worth a hill of beans. (我老闆認為這個提案一無是處)
2. The writer asked his friends to look over his new novel.
   look over (phr.)仔細查看；Ex. You must look over a second hand car before you buy it. (買二手車前要先好好檢查)；overlook (v.) 漏看; 忽略 Ex. We can afford to overlook minor offences. (我們容許犯小錯誤)
3. We are sick at the dirty public toilets.
   be sick at感到噁心；be sick of感到厭煩Ex. I'm sick of her unending grumbles. (你不斷發牢騷讓我感到厭煩)。

   be notable for (phr.) 著名的、顯要的；noticeable (v.)值得注意的，明顯的，Ex. Youth drug abuse is a noticeable issue. (少年吸毒問題是令人關切的)。

   Ifs and buts (phr.)藉口，推托。Ex. I don't want to hear any ifs and buts that you don't meet my parents until we are very close to marriage. (不要再推託說要論及婚嫁時你才願意見我父母)。
6. After having a heavy meal, I lapse into food coma.
   food coma飽到想昏睡，Ex. I got food coma, and I need a double espresso. (我飽到想昏睡，需要一杯特濃espresso)
7. I refuse to throw in the towel, and believe that the bad conditions will be change.
   throw in the towel (phr.)放棄或認輸；同意為throw in the sponge；字詞來源為拳擊賽中，當選手對決過久，教練丟出毛巾以喊停。
8. The politician put out feelers for his election speech.
   feelers (n.)試探；慣用法為put out feelers。
