老外主管齜牙裂嘴的舉措看似唐突又搞笑，但他其實是想藉具體的表情，強化他亟欲展現魄力的信念。show one’s teeth這句慣用語有兩種意思，一是「藉權力、權威來嚇唬或懲罰某人」，另一就是指「拿出魄力」。

例：If you really want to solve this problem, you need to show your teeth.（如果你真的想要解決這個問題，你需要拿出魄力。）

有趣的是，除了露出牙齒是代表「展現魄力」，在英文慣用語中，還有露出臉、手和腳跟的用法：show one’s face意思較直接，就是「公開露面」；show one’s hand則是「表明自己的意圖或計劃」，也可簡單解作「攤牌」（注意hand用單數形）；show one's heels表示「逃走、逃離」。

例：That super star hasn’t shown her face for quite a long time. People start to suspect that she is seriously ill.（那位超級巨星很久沒有公開露面了，人們開始懷疑她身患重病。）

例：Only after becoming the company’s CEO did he show his hand and reveal that he intended to invest in the futures market.（當上公司執行長後，他才表明意圖，透露他打算投資期貨市場。）

例：When walking into the meeting room, I saw the boss’ face and he looked angry. I smelled a rat. So I just showed my heels.（當我走進會議室時，看見老板的臉，他看來很生氣。因為有不祥的預感，我就逃之夭夭了。）

1. Allow me to show you to the door.
   show somebody the door是「對某人下逐客令」的意思，加入介系詞to才是「送某人到門口」。
2. There’re too many competitors. My business is on the line.
   on the line是指「處於危險狀態」，通常指生意、婚姻、或一個人的名譽甚至生命。少了定冠詞the，全句就變成「我的事業正連上網路」。
3. You are so handsome. I’m all over you.
   I’m over you是「跟你分手」，I’m all over you是「對你非常著迷」，多一個all，意思完全不同。
4. Mary has to fill in for a teacher who is now pregnant.
   fill in for someone是「暫時替代某人工作」的意思；fill in則常在指「填寫」表格。
5. When you come across a new word, you may just look it up in a dictionary.
   少了代名詞it，只有look up的話，會變成「抬頭」或「改善」的意思。
6. The entrance examination is a piece of cake for her.
   a piece of cake是個慣用語，指「事情非常容易」，但多了冠詞a，就真的變成一片蛋糕了！
