When we think of the Olympics, various sports come to mind, but speed walking probably isn't one of them. In fact, not many people realize that this sport has been an Olympic event since 1904. Besides being an old competitive sport, it's also a great form of daily exercise for those who just want to stay fit.
Speed walking comes in many forms, but the basic movements are the same. The upper body is kept straight, and the arms bent at the elbows swing naturally. The hips turn to swing the legs forward, and most importantly, at least one foot should touch the ground at all times during your strides.
The right pace �nto practice speed walking as a form of exercise is around five kilometers per hour, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those who are very fit can go up to six-and-a-half kilometers per hour. Wearing the proper running shoes is important for avoiding injuries and increasing speed. Since the foot rolls from heel to toe during a speed walking stride, the shoes should be flexible, flat, and soft.
