Separating Fact from Fiction on the Internet

The Internet is full of rumors and gossip, so much so that it's often difficult to separate fact from fiction. Furthermore, in this age of social networks, information spreads at lightning speed. This can result in false news being accepted as the truth by people around the world.
Now, computer scientists in Europe are developing a system that will reveal the truth or falsity of a claim almost immediately. To begin with, the system divides rumors into types. One type involves claims about what could happen in the near future. For example, a social media post might report that interest rates will soon rise. Another type involves topics that cause strong arguments among groups, such as Taiwan's recent trade agreement with China. This was a popular social media subject, but it was sometimes difficult to tell whether information posted about it was reliable.
People also unknowingly share inaccurate information, such as those related to health and cures for diseases. Another type of lie is spread on purpose to damage people's images. Gossip about famous actors and politicians is an example.

現在，歐洲的一群電腦科學家正在發展一種幾乎能立刻顯示所聲稱的事是真或假的系統。首先，這個系統會將謠言分類。有一類包含在不久將來可能發生的聲明。比如說，一則社交媒體貼文可能報導利率不久就會調升。另一類則包含在各團體間引發強烈爭執的話題，像是台灣最近與中國的貿易協定。這是社交媒體上的一個熱門話題，但有時候很難判斷相關貼文的資訊是否可靠。
人們也在不知不覺當中分享不正確的資訊，像是那些與健康和疾病治療相關的訊息。另一類謊言是刻意傳播來損害他人的形象。關於知名演員及政治人物的八卦就是個例子。
