Plunge into a New Year
It's New Year's Day, and people are spending it
in a variety of ways. Some are taking down Christmas decorations, while
others are sleeping late and enjoying a day off work or school. However,
a few brave souls celebrate the start of a new year in a rather unusual
way—by taking a plunge into freezing cold waters.
Winter swimming is a growing global phenomenon.
All around the world, more and more people are starting the New Year
off with a swim in frigid waters. From Harbin, China, to Boston,
Massachusetts, winter swimming events are being held to kick off the
New Year with a twist.
One of the oldest of these icy events is the
Polar Bear Swim in Vancouver, which began in 1920. Over in Europe,
the Berlin Seals dress up in costumes for their New Year's Day dip.
