Celebrating a Gift of Blossoms
Sunlight streams through soft pink and white petals. As far as
the eye can see, the blossoms glow like jewels against the dark tree limbs. It is cherry
blossom season, and your thoughts probably immediately jump to Japan. However, the colorful
scene described is in Washington, D.C., and it's just in time for the National Cherry Blossom
Festival.
Washington's beautiful cherry trees do have a link to Japan. In 1912,
Tokyo gave the first trees to the American capital city. They were a sign of friendship
between the two countries. More trees were given and planted over the years. Now, when
spring hits D.C., over 3,700 cherry trees on the grounds of the Washington Monument and
in West and East Potomac Parks burst into bloom.
