Good Cho's: Bringing Together the Past and the Present
Where do you go if you're looking for good food, design, and music all under one roof? The answer is Good Cho's. Located in Taipei's Xinyi Public Assembly Hall, this restaurant-shop offers a setting where people can retreat from modern life and experience a simpler past.
The space is decorated with wood furniture and details that remind people of traditional Taiwanese life, such as lampshades made with the metal lids of Tatung rice cookers. A shopping area designed to look like a kitchen sells a variety of locally made products, from sauces and spices to shampoos and books. A small room to the side displays colorful craft items made by local, independent brands.
Through windows in the shopping area, cooks can be seen rolling dough. In a space that emphasizes Taiwanese culture, you might think that they were preparing dumplings. However, what they're actually making are bagels, and at Good Cho's, they come in several flavors. Using mango, black sesame, shrimp, and other ingredients that most Taiwanese people grew up with, Good Cho's gives this Western food a particularly local taste.
