Bruce Lee: A Modern Hero
When Bruce Lee died in 1973, he was only 32 years old. Despite his short life, his achievements as an actor, martial arts expert, and philosopher influenced people and made him a hero in the minds of many.
Lee played a big part in changing the way Westerners viewed Asians. Before him, Hollywood movies showed Asians mainly as stereotypes: funny looking and strange, almost like cartoon figures. When Bruce Lee began acting in America, he felt the effects of this type of racism. He was unable to get any serious parts. It wasn't until his appearance in martial arts films that Americans began to take notice of his talents. In these movies, Lee played the brave fighter who defended the weak. His perfectly fit body and his strength, speed, and personality amazed viewers. He gave them a new image of Chinese people and culture.
Bruce Lee thus became the first Chinese hero on the American screen. Through his roles and in real life, he showed people that life's difficulties and society's injustices can be conquered with the strength of just a single person.
