Happy Birthday,Donald Duck
─Joe Henley
When most people think of Disney cartoons, they think of Mickey, that cute mouse with the high-pitched voice. While Mickey may be the mascot, it's his foul-tempered friend Donald Duck that has captured hearts since he burst onto the scene 80 years ago this month.
The world was first introduced to stormy Donald Duck in 1934. His true character came out in his second appearance, though, in an animated short called “Orphan's Benefit.” It was then that he became the foil to Mickey the hero. From then on, through 178 theatrical film credits, Donald would continually look for ways to get under Mickey's skin. Each time, he'd fail and lose his temper in dramatic fashion, and the world loved him for it.
Donald has appeared in more cartoons than any other Disney character. In the comic-book world, he trails only characters such as Batman and Spider-Man in popularity. Donald has also gained a large following in northern Europe, where being a devoted fan of Disney comics is known as “Donaldism.” While some people may have overlooked the meaning of Donald's character, people in Europe truly appreciate it. For them, Donald Duck's can-do personality and his refusal to give up in the face of constant setbacks are what appeal the most.
