Shopping in a Traditional Market
Connor and Melody are at the entrance to a traditional market in Taiwan.

C: |
Do we really have to shop for food at a traditional market? Why can't we just go to a supermarket? |
M: |
My mother has been shopping here for years. She says it has the freshest food in the city. |
C: |
Well, it also seems to be the noisiest place in the city—and the smelliest! |
M: |
Stop complaining and just go with the flow. |
C: |
Well . . . |
M: |
This way, Connor! This seller has the best fruit in the entire market. |
C: |
Wow! It does look fresh. |
M: |
You can pick items up, inspect them, and smell them. Try doing that with fruit wrapped in plastic in a supermarket. |
C: |
Wow, a free sample! Thanks! Mm, it's good. |
M: |
Told you! And because so many people shop here, there's plenty of turnover. This means we get the freshest products. |
C: |
What about prices? Can we bargain? |
M: |
You usually buy by weight, or you can look for special deals, like ten apples for NT$100. Bargaining is OK, but try to be reasonable. |
C: |
This fruit is great—so far, so good. |
M: |
Next stop, the fresh-tofu stall. Hey, how about a cup of sugarcane juice? |
C: |
Great! You know, I think the traditional market is starting to grow on me. |
