We have all seen videos of people attempting silly experiments, stunts, or dares on the Internet or TV. Sometimes these videos feature kids successfully attempting bike and snowboarding tricks down flights of steps, but others show stunts going horribly wrong. For example, the runaway YouTube hit Cannonball Ice Dude shows a man trying to break through the ice in a swimming pool. Another recent hit video involves people doing their best to swallow a spoonful of cinnamon in less than 60 seconds. Unfortunately, the cinnamon challenge, as it is now called, is both impossible and dangerous, although this has not stopped some people.
Few television shows or websites, however, are committed to explaining the science behind these stunts or the reasons that so many fail. To fill this gap and educate viewers, National Geographic Channel has recently begun broadcasting a show called The Science of Stupid. Tune in to see if Kevlar vests are really bulletproof, and watch these and other videos to learn the theories behind the laws of science and physics.
