Education for Everyone
The right to education is recognized as a basic human
right by the United Nations. Therefore, promoting education is not only a
teacher's or parent's duty. It is something that everyone should do his or
her part to help with. Nobel Peace Prize nominee Greg Mortenson sets a great
example for those in support of this basic human right.
In 1993, Mortenson got lost and hurt on a hiking trip
and was saved by the kind people of the remote village of Korphe in Pakistan.
He was surprised to find that the village had no school. The local children's
only way to practice writing was with sticks in the mud. As he left the village,
Mortenson promised that he would return to build a school.
