From the outside, the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland doesn't look special, but after a 150-meter climb down wooden stairs, you'll see something amazing. For centuries, the miners who worked here have carved beautiful works of art out of salt, including statues of mythical, historical, and religious figures. The most striking thing they left behind is perhaps the huge underground cathedral, which even has chandeliers made from rock salt.
Another underground attraction born out of the mining industry is found in Coober Pedy in South Australia. The desert temperatures are so extreme in this opal-mining town that miners decided to build everything underground. Today, it has houses, shops, bars, swimming pools, and museums beneath the ground's surface. Though you may imagine these places to be dark and sad, they're actually attractive, with lively, pink sandstone walls.
